PngOptimizer makes smaller PNG than PngOut

Many designers/developers have discovered and used PNGOUT for awhile now to make smaller (sometimes significantly smaller) PNG files with better compression. I recently discovered another GPL program, PngOptimizer that makes even smaller files in many cases, especially for PNG8 files (256 colors with transparency, similar to GIF but better in some cases and IE supports it).

Flash Stand-Alone Installer for Internet Explorer

Ever since Adobe took over Macromedia’s Flash products, they have slowly converted everything into their corporate style, making the software big and bulky and taking away the “stand-alone” installer for Internet Explorer that you could put on a CD or flash drive and take with you so you don’t need an internet connection to install it.

The Firefox version has to be stand-alone since it’s a plugin and they can’t execute code from Firefox, but the IE version insists on installing itself from the web via active-x, which I don’t allow on my network since it’s incredibly dangerous and mostly just used for annoyances like ads.

But I stumbled across this little gem buried halfway in this page: Continue reading ‘Flash Stand-Alone Installer for Internet Explorer’

stuff I would have wanted to see at WordCamp SF 2008

Apparently they crammed it all into one day this year and the tech stuff was held separately (downstairs) from the general stuff (don’t want those devs and general users to mingle, ruh roh!)

I don’t fly so I was hoping for some audio or video recordings. I found a live video feed from some bloggers upstairs but nothing downstairs (at least not that I could find). I need to hunt down the slideshows for Crazyhorse, BuddyPress, Nginx etc. Finding a schedule of the tech stuff would probably be a good start, I found one for the general stuff upstairs but not downstairs. ZDnet covered only the non-dev side, but in detail.

Was there *no* bbPress presentation this year at WordCamp? Really?
Twitter went insane with WordCamp stuff!
added: some really good notes from Jeremy Person

Wikipedia Overlords delete bbPress page

5/26 update: a noble group of folks have taken up the effort to restore and rebuild the page on wikipedia – I’ll leave this post for posterity…

I’m not quite sure when this happened (update: oh now I see, just last week) but I know it was there a few months ago as I wanted to see again what it said:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BbPress
It had some nice history and progress about bbPress. Virtually every other forum software out there is on Wikipedia so this makes me very curious what kind of politics are going on or if someone had something against Automattic.

Apparently bbPress fails their elite “Notability Guidelines”
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/delete&page=BbPress
So at least 5000 installs with millions of people using those installs doesn’t count eh? I guess the 2k of text was taking up too much precious space on their servers, sheesh.

From what I can tell, it was a speedy deletion, meaning it was not even reviewed or given notice for deletion – an administrator just arbitrarily did what they felt like doing.

At least Deletionpedia has saved it and here’s the page cache from MSN Yahoo and Wayback Machine
(google doesn’t cache Wikipedia deletions apparently)
